What is moissanite?

Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral also known as silicon carbide. It was discovered by French scientist, Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893 at a meteorite crater in Arizona. As moissanite is one of the rarest minerals found in nature, Henri wanted to find a way that science could reproduce this remarkable yet extremely rare natural mineral.

Nearly a century later and after years of experimentation, scientists at Charles & Colvard developed a process for developing moissanite in a lab, bringing you a hand cut, socially responsible and eternally brilliant gemstone.

Where does Chupi source moissanite gemstones from?

We source our moissanites from Charles & Colvard in the US, who have been creating moissanite in a lab for over two decades. Charles & Colvard are the original creator of moissanite and the only company in the world to create moissanite using a patented thermal growing process, a process that their scientists developed.

What does moissanite rate as on the Mohs Scale of Hardness?

A moissanite gemstone is 9.25 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, second only to diamond which is a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.

What gives moissanite it’s fire?

A gemstone’s fire is determined by a gemological property called dispersion. Dispersion refers to the prism effect that occurs when pure white light enters a non-opaque object, breaks into spectral (rainbow) colors, and reflects back to the viewer.

Moissanite’s dispersion exceeds that of any gemstone including diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald.

Does moissanite break easily?

No, a moissanite gemstone is 9.25 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is one of the toughest known gemstones.
